What is Wellness
Focusing on one’s overall well-being is a great way to promote healing. Eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising can have huge benefits for mental health. Doing acts of self care, such as going for a walk, engaging in a favorite hobby, or spending time with loved ones can help survivors’ mental health improve.
Improving one’s overall health and wellbeing is an important part of a survivor’s journey to healing. A survivor is better equipped to thrive if they are physically well. Exercise, eating a balanced diet, getting rest, and practicing self-care are all ways to improve one’s physical wellness.
Self care can be in any aspect of a person’s life-- relationships, professional, emotional, physical, or spiritual. Doing acts of self-care in a variety of ways helps strengthen one’s overall wellbeing. Here are some examples of how to engage in self-care in all aspects of life
Relationship self-care:
Spend time with loved ones
Take some “me” time when needed
Celebrate special events with loved ones
Professional self-care:
Attend professional development events
Only check work email during work hours
Mentor or get mentored by a colleague
Negotiate for a raise
Emotional self-care:
Journal regularly
Meditate
Think about or write about things you are grateful for
Spend time with loved ones
Physical self-care:
Develop a healthy sleep routine
Eat food that brings joy
Go on walks regularly
Take sick time when needed
Spiritual self-care:
Practice yoga
Go to spiritual services
Talk with others about your beliefs
Spend time in nature
